The system-based processes of both the Japanese conceptual artist On Kawara and motor manufacturer Toyota (and their shared typographical leanings) are behind the title and thinking of this exhibition.
This unlikely pairing describes the meeting of art & engineering, poetry and pragmatism, which happen to be the major concerns of British designer Michael Marriott.
Based on this concept, the “On Toyota” exhibition features a new line of furniture and products designed by Michael Marriott – all of which are made of Japanese cedar harvested from the prefecture of Miyagi.
Using the same cedar sections (140 x 18 mm) as the main material, Michael has collaborated with Ishinomaki Laboratory, a Japanese furniture maker that also shares a common approach towards materials and design, to launch this exclusive collection.

コンセプチュアル・アーティストである河原温と自動車製造業者であるトヨタが共通して用いる、システマティックなプロセスやタイポグラフィー。
この一見縁のなさそうな両者を組み合わせ、アートと産業、詩的感覚と実用主義とを結び付けること―それこそがMichael Marriottのデザイン思考の根底にあるものであり、またこの展覧会 “ON TOYOTA” のコンセプトでもあります。
本展示では、このコンセプトを元に、全て同じ規格の宮城の県産材を使ってデザインされた家具やプロダクトのコレクションを展示いたします。このコレクションは全て、ある意味で共通したコンセプトを持つ石巻工房とのコラボレーションにより製作されます。
